Re: Peter spanton Interview

Hi Christiane Thanks for posting the link. I found it interesting. He is one of the original UK Wado students. On the Higashi website, I noticed here http://www.higashi.org.uk/ that he was graded to 4th dan in 1974 by Suzuki sensei and Kono sensei. I'd be interested to learn more about the circumsta...

Re: Belts

There's some nonsense written about karate belts; dont wash them (rinses the spirit out), don't let them touch the floor (disrespectful). It's there to hold your jacket firm at the waist. If the belt is quite new, then the knot may loosen easily in which case it makes perfect sense to tuck the ends ...

Re: Socrates and suhari

[FYI: here's the state of the art of Wado Holland: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HsGb4mI9Eo0 The fella performing kobudo is Gert-Jan Martens, the bald guy is Jerry Smit, both among the most senior KBN wadoka. In fact Gert-Jan manages the wado faction within the KBN. I've spent some time in Jerry's...

Otsuka articles

A couple of articles here amongst the old Blackbelt magazine archive, one I've posted before on AKF, but there are a few nice sequence photo's of Ohtsuka and Jiro which I'm sure many will enjoy.

Demo

Came across this old set of demo's from UKKW days:

http://www.japanartscentre.co.uk/karate_demos.html

Link takes you to the page then look for the UKKW 1978 demo. The Suzuki / Sakagami / Sugasawa demo looks like what they used for the intro to the BBC series "Way of the Warrior".

Re: Rare Ohtsuka Book?

Hi AJ It is one the books Tokyo University karate club has produced for its members. I don't think it was intended for wider distribution and certainly not for re-sale at $1600. It does not contain any photo's of Otsuka either within the book or on the dvd's which accompany it. Edit: $1600 should ju...

Re: Idori

[Hi Blackcat, Yes, if you mean in Tenjin Shinyo ryu. In Shindo Yoshin ryu the standing Kanegidori is very similar to the kneeling version. The TSR Shumokudori survives in SYR but is called Sodeotoshi (sleeve drop). This probably indicates it came from the Nakamura Yoshin Koryu line because of the d...

Re: Idori

Hi Blackcat, It's confusing isn't it? Frequently the ura version of a particular kata will develop its own unique nick name. Takamura sensei did this all the time which drove us batty on occasion. Other times a teacher will employ his own nickname for a kata or read the kanji using an alternate or ...

[quote="wadoka"]Shumokudori footage http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UUE0I-l1EH8 Hakoishi sensei calls this technique 'kubi jime' and on his video he shows it as a variation of shumokudori and gives it the full title of "ura nage kubi jime". Looking at the list of techniques from S...

Re: Idori

[ Ben, Out of curiosity, where are you drawing the line when you say these things are not for regular training? idori, tanto tori, sword defense? And out of curiosity does anyone here know how often the WIKF practices these in a typical dojo or at a seminar? For many of us we stop at kihon, kata, a...
