Just reading up on ‘Kawanakajima’ history and the 5 battles of the Sengoku period and thought this fella was particularly determined to write his name in history:

”Yamamoto Kansuke charged alone into the mass of Uesugi samurai, suffering upwards of 80 bullet wounds before retiring to a nearby hill and committing seppuku.”

Some 400 years later: Suzuki Tatsuo sensei’s Kenbu- Ryu sei kata was a tribute to this kind of dedicated commitment and spirit displayed by Yamamoto, especially when showing the two moments in the kata where his balance was adjusted before continuing.

I imagine Kawanakajima and the Sengoku period held many 'such' moments like that.

Hi Martin, just a little information on Ryu sei kata.

Suzuki sensei polished Ryu Sei kata for many years. At first he called it Kenbu kata and when he formed Wado Kokusai Karate Do Renmei he changed the name to Ryu Sei kata.

Depending on the kanji this has many different connotations but his kata was different from most which is why I favour the reading to mean the ‘Suzuki Ha Nature.

The Kawanakajima battleground lays just a little south of Nagano about 170 kilometres north west of Tokyo. Kawanakajima means an ‘Island in the middle of a river’

So when Suzuki sensei kneels to prepare himself for battle by pulling his sleeves up with a silken tasuki and adjusting the knot to be precisely in the middle of his spine just below the 3rd spinal process, an acupuncture point called Shen Zhu part of the function of this point 'calms the Mind and Will',

There is a moment just then when I get this picture of the riverbank where many such men prepared knowing the length of their future was in the balance.

As I say his kata was a little different from most.

Hi Martin,

Putting two and two together, Reg's comments on Kawanakajima and comments made before Suzuki sensei did Ryu Sei kata in London, about Takeda Shingen, I came up with this.

It seems that sensei used a very old recording, so it is hard to compare.
I might be way off with this song. In that case I guess it is a very beautiful song....
