BTW, traditionally Duvel is brewed with two hops. Annually, the brewers at Duvel go looking for a third hop to treat Duvel fans a with a new beer, namely the Duvel Triple Hop.

Chinte kata has three hops at the end...

I saw one performance of Chinte on YouTube the other day and everyone was so please that the third hop took him back to the starting position. Nice.

This has to be one of the eternal mysteries for me Gordon. I did read - in Kosaku Yokata's 'Shotokan Myths' - that a kata competitor was docked a whole point in the early days for adding an extra hop...? Evidently numeracy, if not reason, in kata is vital of course.

The pitfalls of kata competition aesthetics would be another thread as always, but not really worth of one in my opinion.

Agreed Gordon, but picking up on Reg's point if I may, after a few Duvels my katas have at least three hops in them and still don't finish where I started ...

Ah Gordon, my comment was only meant to show the dangers of mixing irrational thought and hops - whether in beer or kata - can actually distort reality. Whereas Pliny's "in vino veritas" would perhaps argue there is truth to be found in a little wine.?

I think this - and the pitfalls of changing kata - may well be worth a little discussion - with a modicum of suitable libation of course..

Interesting discussion...
People need to be aware that the triple hops may be dangerous when using in a real life situation.
There was a posting on Facebook the other day, but seems they removed it after being annihilated by the bone...
