Since I have a few minutes (meaning my 3 sons are beating up on each other and not bothering me), I wanted to post a couple of things relevant to this thread. It might belong with a newer thread, but it uses some concepts started here. First, I have been studying the writings of Moshe Feldenkrais, one of the earliest Western judoka. He pioneered efficient body mechanics, even going so far as to certify teachers in "Awareness Through Movement" while still teaching judo in France. For those without access to practice some things in this thread or sensei to show how things are done, the Feldenkrais books are great for understanding the theory behind right movement. This is an old archived interview that touches on a great many things yet seems like a post on this forum; Feldenkrais describes first meeting Jigoro Kano, why the concept of ki is full of shit (his words), and why most dancers are half-cooked dancers because they haven't reorganized how their body moves: http://web.archive.org/web/200910190549 ... icle-4.htm

Anyway...part two. Kenji Tokitsu wrote a detailed biography and translation of Musashi and "The Book Of Five Rings", one of the best I've read.In the hardback version (the softback/ trade paperback is abridged) Tokitsu talks of a famous kendoka Morita Monjuro and his attempt to understand Musashi's Single-Cadence Strike. Monjuro believes that Musashi had perfect handling of the body because he knew how to use the diagonal tensions of the abdomen/ thorax. Luckily I found a direct quote of the text on Google; and as for what style Tokitsu is doing now...it's like that early Who song "I Can't Explain"...

It's interesting - I'm not sure I'm 100% convinced, but I'm all ears...
