As per my post in the events section – I went to the Japan Matsuri at the weekend and gorged myself on Japanese food and Budo all day.
It was really fun to see embu from the different groups and the common thread that ran through all decent martial arts on display, but what was more interesting were the differences.
What I mean is more along the lines of how they approach their training. Things like reiho and mokuso etc. – there were no two group the same – not even close.
For example; the Aikido guys were very sombre in their approach to mokuso compared to the sempai of the Kendo group that shouted “MOKUSOOOOOOOOOO” at the top of his voice… brilliant watch!!
Then there was seiza!
Knowing that within Wado we have at least 2 different ways (that I know of anyway), I thought I’d see whether there was a common theme but again no, all different.
Different horses for different courses I know, and I for one love it.
Thought I’d share as it is quiet here.

I suspect this might be about ways of getting down and getting up, not about the sitting per se. Had to change from the method I was originally taught circa 1989.

Too early for me and only just picked up on nuance.
Maybe not in Wado but is there not seiza for me and seiza for women as in knees together?

Yes I have seen a couple of variations prior to but I am assuming a left right or unified hand movement Tim.

The knees together for ladies is to do with their clothing (Kimono) and restrictions, as can be seen here in this Yoshin-ryu Naginata-Jutsu embu. So it is exists in certain ryuha as a throwback to this.

Tim,
Yes, it was more about getting up and down although I have seen variations in the hand movements too.
I'll try to post some examples when I get home from work.

(Shown at the start of this long vid - Sensei Danubio is in this distance, but its the only footage I could find).
In my dojo we do the kneeling down part the same as the Ohtsuka vid, but when we stand up it is reverse to how we kneel down - so that’s another version - this was how Ohgami sensei also explained it.
He also showed us the Danubio version which he said was more of a JKF approach - I believe.
Certainly the Danubio version is closer to how other arts including sword based arts tend to do it in my experience

This is how we do it. Just like Suzuki Sensei.oneya wrote:... One movement moving from the core, Suzuki Tatsuo.

And yes the JKF (not JKF Wadokai) has a different way.
Gordon, if I photocopy the 2 different versions can you put it up here?
If you leave it to me I will never get it done. But I can easily copy and email you the photo sequence contrasting JKF Wadokai with JKF if you want to post it here.

What I like about this version is there is no preamble and no wasted energy, just gravity and the first introduction to Ten Chi Jin.
