I saw this video and started to wonder if it is common that especially ladys wear hakama in Japan ?

Practitioners wearing hakama in this video are mainly females ? Is this only a coincidense?

In general, I haven´t seen wado people wearing hakama so much..... actually not even once

(except in the demonstration purposes (videos) e.g. Suzuki, Ajari )

Did Otsuka meijin ever wear hakama ?

Nice find Ben.

Done a few Embu now (Wado and Koryu) and I think that hakama make it stand out a little.

The crowd seem to like it, as long as you don't trip over yourself!!

Interesting vid indeed! I think the trouser legs are tied - perhaps to prevent tripping?

For some reason it was interesting to see Otsuka correcting the student.

Most pictures or films of Otsuka, if he is wearing hakama he tucks the sides in under the hakama belt, it allows free movement. If you look back to Karatedo Taikan it is shown this way and explained in the text.

The name escapes me (I am sure Steve or Toby will enlighten us) but often, the hem of the Hakama is tucked into the "himo" (ties) this is quite regular practice during keiko- particularly if things get down to the nitty gritty.

Mentally I am trying to imagine being there, getting correct, but we don't have to try too hard as it is the same as our sensei keep repeating and trying to instill into us.

See the gyakuzuki, cautioning against over-twisting. Give that guy a clip around the ear for repeating the same thing after he has been corrected.

See the kamae explanation. How many times has it been said here that it is all about attack, attack, attack. No clearer demonstration than by Ohtsuka Sensei himself in motion.

Goes to show, soak up what you can from those still around before they are gone.

Even with Toyama sensei resident in Italy and Ohtsuka meijin touring in Italy he still cannot hear why, or see why, or feel why he continues to be unreachable, so why is that.?

To be able to be corrected and to remember the correction one has to be malleable physically and mentally.

To be able to be corrected into the right shape/position we need to relax and allow to be moved. I sometimes see people tense up or even oppose sensei's corrective move. That's when I take a step back.

There is also the concept of 'personal space' which may make a student flinch or 'shut down' while being physically adjusted also. A while ago now I had a male student leave the dojo because he was 'physically adjusted' by a 3rd dan senior = much like Ohtsuka was doing in this video - which made him think the sandan was entertaining some homosexual agenda. No manner of explanation from me could dissuade him otherwise and he left in high dudgeon never to return. Wado ryu is not easy in many respects.
