Hi,
An intersting post on the subject of Shu Ha Ri.
Actually, his whole blog is worth a read:

That was excellent.
I liked his description of the spoonfed Western attitude to learning and its shortfalls.
My own Sensei’s attitude towards self discovery and exploration of technique very much mirrors the approach described here. Intellectual understanding alone has little currency you have to put in the ‘flight time’.
The teaching/learning style of the old traditional Japanese arts is largely antithetical to the contemporary western methodology. However, I am not sure that this has always been the case, but I don’t know enough about the Guild system and the Master/Apprentice relationship of old to make a definitive comparison.

And I thought this line was very pertinent:
You can’t expect to “get it” if you just put your brain on cruise control and let the teacher do all the heavy mental lifting, as he tries to teach you the kata
I think the whole blog is very well written Tim.
