Karate Gi suggestions

Post by majin29 »

I'm shopping around for a new gi. The one I currently have is a rather poorly fabricated one that came with the membership at the last dojo I signed up with. It's 7oz cotton/polyestor blend. I'm looking for something like a 12oz brushed cotton- something that's going to hold up over years. The deal with my wife was that I give Wado a good few months before deciding to upgrade my gi. Now that I'm planning on stepping up training in 2012, I need something that can handle the extra use. Here's a link to the one I have my eye on:

Is the price about right for this type? The mid-grade ones the 8oz don't strike me as much better than what I have..... I figured invest once, rather than repeatedly on a good uniform.

I've never heard of the make (but that means nothing). Looks ok to me, I did notice a Tokaido gi in the clearance section reduced from $119 down to $50

Another "top end" brand that you may or may not have access to in the States is Hirota

I think it is good to spoil yourself with a nice gi. I saved up my pennies when I got to brown belt and bought myself a Shureido to celebrate.

Since then I have torn the backside out of Tokaido, Hirota and so many Blitz "White Diamonds" I lose count.

Nowadays, I tend to buy the cheaper middle of the road stuff that I know will take the abuse - and then bin them when they are smoked.

Get yourself a lightweight or middleweight gi. Good for training in summer, carrying around and washing/drying.

Get one that is whisper quiet so it doesn't make a sound.

Try this list of suppliers:

You will have to splash out though as the exchange rate is not so favourable just now. Shobu supply the official wadokai dogi too which are very comfortable..up to a point. They also treat them so they stay whiter for longer.

Tokyo shureido has changed its name to Toyodo now, but I think that is one of the shops which caters to foreign visitors more frequently as its easy to find.

I would agree with the suggestion to stick to medium or light weight and steer clear of the heavy weight gi, but it comes down to preference.

Yes I was interested in that initially but it looks like it has shorter sleeves than the others and I'm not sure whether that's acceptable in class or not.

I live in Southern Ontario near Toronto which is actually more south than some parts of Northern California so luckily our winters aren't that brutal. Ottawa gets it bad and then of course other cities like Winnipeg and Edmonton. But balmy it certainly isn't!
