Yes we probably practice the same 15 solo kata from the Okinawan aspect and the yield is still amazing as far as I am concerned. Solo training with torimi or ukemi role with kata of the koryu line is also a gold mine just for the taisabaki and I haven't exhausted them yet. so I feel that has to be enough to start with Keiko - and then there is renshu..

my point was that it was not the mere mention of the name 'Suparenpei' that drew all the comments. I think it is a legitimate talking point on a wado forum.

To state you've known the 15 kata forever is one hell of a statement to make. I guess we should be beating a path to your dojo ;-)

I still think if you were to 'learn' any okinawan kata from a dvd/Youtube or whatever (or any kata for that matter) no matter how much knowledge you have of karate, I'm sure if you took into a Shito/Goju dojo the sensei will say something like "no, your doing that all wrong"

Dvd's have their place but they should be nothing more than an aide memoir

Anyway I'm off to pracice Pinan Nidan - again

Ha ha. Well I must admit you got me on that one. I doubt I really KNOW any kata--maybe niseishi, maybe Pinan yondan, who knows? BUT I have known the movements and sequence of the 15 katas for.....35 years or so.

I do think one could learn a kata from a good DVD featuring a good teacher. Perhaps not in any way master it, but learn it well and beyond just the sequence, yes.

But at any rate, please trust that I will not be learning Suparenpei from you tube!
