Sensing

Post by tkaneshige »

I ran across this article in the New Yorker and was wondering if it relates to karate and mushin and the ability to sense your opponent's intention to attack. The article, entitled How to Tell When Someone is Lying, plays up the importance of unconscious perception. Its conclusion:

"No matter how much data you have and how many thousands of hours of training you acquire, you will never have the certainty of a Pinocchio to guide you. And the worst thing you can do? Become so confident in your ability to tell a lie that your conscious certainty gets in the way of your unconscious perceptions. We can tell who’s lying—as long as we don’t think about it too much."
