Had a 1st kyu visitor to the club the other night from some Southern based association.
At the end he said "what should i call you, sempai, sensei?"
My first reaction was to say Gordon. I didn't understand the context at the time. On looking up his association I would see that they use an approach that I have seen with one or two other UK Wado based associations where up to say 3rd dan you have the title Sempai, and then for 4th dan and above instructors, you have the title sensei.
Personally I think this does a disservice to both terms, shows little understanding and is too arbitrary.

Re: Just call me XXXXXX
Had a teenager start a few weeks back. Very quiet but I can see that he it trying and making adjustments when prompted.
As he left the other night, we heard him speak for the first time, loud and bold as you like, Bye Gordon, see you next week. I would prefer that although Spartacus is OK, but don't you have to be 7 dan for that?
I won't see him next week as it is the elections and the church hall is being used for polling.

Well I never knew that. Our association states that all instructors despite their Dan grade, should be referred to as Sensei.
