Excited about Sensei Wicks' clinic

Post by majin29 »

I'm looking forward to attending the clinic on Sept 9th in Brampton (Ontario Canada) given by Sensei Jon Wicks. Has anyone on this forum spent time studying under him? My sensei said to expect learning some advanced waza. I'm only green belt to I'm really excited about broadening my wado knowledge and skills. Currently I'm working on improving spinning back kick. My inner ear isn't the greatest so any quick head turns get me a little off kilter.

Hi David

I've never trained with Sensei John Wicks. Some of my friends from my club have and only say good things about him. I believe he is a fine technician and he was Suzuki's no.2 so that must speak volumes.

Hi David,

Sensei Jon Wicks is an excellent teacher and a very strong fighter. Wicks has been training Wado every day for more than 40 years, and he used to have private lessons with Dr. Suzuki 3 days a week. He has been a full time instructor for decades, running app. 20 clubs before he became Suzuki´s successor. He is in great shape so you can expect hard training!

I used to think of him primarily as a fighter (he has won all major wado titles) but his traditional wado is fantastic. His timing and control of distance and angle of attack is world class. What I like most about his teaching is that he is able to adjust the technique, timing and rythm of all students in a very short time. I enjoy his kata teaching as well.

I only went to one course with Wicks before I got 6th dan some years ago. His teaching was far better than I expected and now I try to go to as many of his courses as possible. In the past 12 months I have been to his courses in USA, England, Sweden, Norway and Ireland, and I will go to Greece and train with him in september. I have invited him to Norway twice this year. He is arriving in Bergen later today for our summer course.

Jon Wicks is a nice man with a great sense of humour. Inside the dojo he is very hard.

Thanks kato! There's one segment of his seminar on YouTube that looks really compelling so I'm really excited about this opportunity.

You can also check his tachi dori demo here:

I concur with Cato's comments. I would only add that Suzuki Sensei groomed him for years to be WIKF's Chief Instructor.

I'll be honest... I thought that was dreadful.

Gary,

We know you are involved in koryu now so could you give us the benefit of your insight into what you are seeing?
Education is a good thing and it might help others see more clearly. No sarcasm intended at all. Genuine interest.
Its on youtube and he was doing a demo so i suppose it is fair game.
I personally have never done a Wado tachi tori in my life because It is beyond my abilities. I only do the sword defense from Shindo Yoshin Ryu but that is a different animal and I suck at it.
