Hi,
Why the pinch of salt?If wado ryu was othsuka's budo knowledge plus karate, and the karate influence seems to get put to the side a lot,one wonders why othsuka trained in karate at all.If his koryu knowledge had such dept which seems to be the case, why bother training in karate?obviously he must of liked karate a lot.Is his thinking known on this subject or is it wado ryu students that tend to negate its obvios karate influence more?

Re: Why the pinch of salt?
If we are talking food then step aside, this is my department :-)
Saying the karate element is like a pinch of salt needn't mean that karate plays the smallest of roles. Or be dismissive about karate. Ohtsuka sensei didn't seem to just want to repackage jujutsu again. Maybe the pinch of salt gave his recipe that final touch, that lift.

Hi Mezusmo, I don't think the comment is meant to devalue or diminish its Okinawan karate component but more to emphasise the depth of its residual teachings that are beyond this. When one considers that most people's training in wado ryu consists mainly of its 'karate' component and yet goes on for many many years it is then that we can realise the depth of the teaching and training that has to come before we can understand Ohtsuka meijin's level of wisdom.mezusmo wrote:Hi,

It is not the knowledge of wado ryu that we should be seeking but its wisdom.

Hi Wadoka and Oneya,
That makes sense, its just when i see the forms of wado ryu i see an obvious karate influence i found the pinch of salt statement puzzling, it could be my own lack of understanding of wado dept.
It seems like a long road,i will continue training and get back to u in a couple of degades so.
