you don't do the kata in reverse like you've hit the rewind button :) you still do the same techniques just do the left side first instead of the right etc. and there are quite a few kata in quite a few styles that start with offensive techniques. karate ne sente nashi is said to have been mis-translated to there is no first strike in karate. the view of quite a few in karate is that as soon as an assailant "behaves in a way that a reasonable man would believe an assault is imminent" then an attack has begun. if you wait for someone to actually throw a punch or kick it can be too late...
