To practice or search

I'm leaving for a new town and I'm guessing it won't have a Wado school. Is there anything that I could practice that won't at least hinder my advancement in Wado (I hope to get back in it)?

I'm guessing a sword art, aikido, or some other types. I know many of the top sensei have ranks in other arts, but I'm sure it was out of necessity (culture) and not as an improvement for their wado.

I have had to change arts twice, from Kenpo Karate to Judo/submisison wrestling and now onto Wado Ryu where I am finally happy as I have found a quality teacher.

If you want to continue with Wado Ryu then first try searching in the area you'll be moving to and see if a club exists there. I am typing this as you have stated you are guessing the will be no club, check before before jumping ship. Ask your current instructor or fellow practioners and they might know. If not there is always the web.

However if you fail to find a Wado school then my best advice would be don't try and think of a style to look for now. When you get there, shop around and find a good instructor. The quality of the instructor can matter more than the style in many ways. My only warnings would be; if the instructor is unwilling to spar or is reliant on senior students to teach then that is suspicious, if it's an unusual system name that you have never heard of before and lastly if their qualifications sound too good to be true. Those should all be warnings that there is something fishy.

Anyway I'd say try and find a karate school if you can before trying a whole different art. Out of the traditional styles; Shotokai, Kase Ha Shotokan Ryu or Yui Shin Kai might be ones to look out for. If you want to try something that hits a bit harder then Enshin or Ashihara karate might be of interest.

Has anyone ever trained with Mr. Michael Cimino-Hurt?

He seems to be part of the WIKF and claims to have trained with Mr. Suzuki closely.

I don't think he is a member. Or at least not a regular one. To be fairly honest, I don't see any modesty from his list of instructors. It seems like a list of instructors he has met over the years at seminars. To me that is an improper thing to do. This says nothing about his technical and teaching ability of course, but it looks "American" to me. Sorry for all Americans - and perhaps I have the wrong image watching too many movies - but I don't like that attitude.

Hi AJ,

The listing of many different high level instructors seems to be a fairly common practice in America. I don't like it. I've visited some website where the instructor listed a teacher he's trained with once and made it seem as if it were a lifelong teaching lesson.

I will eventually visit the dojo, so I will see.
