Hitting Stuff

In our class last night, I was taking the crew through hand mitts and body shield work, when I realized, I just don't care for hitting those pads anymore. I started training in the 70's, when the boxing style heavy bag ruled, and loved pounding on those. As an adult, and very active competitor in my...

Re: Shiomitsu Sensei

Greetings all,

Is there any word on Shiomitsu sensei's prognosis? The last I heard, we was back in the UK, but nothing else.

Cheers,

Jay

Re: looking for a seminar/training opportunity in the USA

Paul,

Come on down to Florida and train with us. It's warmer down here anyway. NYC in January?! Too cold for karate! Ha ha.

If yo make it this far down, you are welcome.

Gary, Auto correct! Yes, phonetically, I'm not sure what wai no na would be. I'll ask Mr. Nash on the next late night discussion around a hotel lobby. LOL

Re: How long are your lessons?

We do 90 mins as well. When I was younger I used to teach for 60 mins and think, "Wow, I've run through my lesson plan in 45 mins, what do I do now." Now, I am barely through ido logon, and time is up. Realistically, 15 mins of physical warm up, 20-30 mind of Winona & ido kihon. Then 4...

Punching Science

I was shown this by a friend. I thought I would post it here for my fellow geeks among us. It's nothing revolutionary for sure, but some cool scientific documentation and acknowledgement of the "re-writing" of neural pathways, by the repetitive nature of karate training. http://www.science...

Re: Killing me softly

So back to my original idea - that Otsuka Sensei was accessing the swordsman's center and weighing it without the guy knowing he was being weighted thus rendering him vulnerable. And the only way you can do this is by accessing the person's center thru body sensitivity and structural awareness. Not...

Re: Doesn't this sound familiar?

Didn't we have a discussion sometime, somewhere, wondering if Otsuka ever even met Ueshiba? Nakata might have a few interesting things to say on the subject. Anyone here connected to him? Not with me Igor. I know Uyeshiba and Otsuka had their encounters. On a separate note Ajari trained at Ueshiba'...

Re: Changes in kata

Most of them in the JOG have had something changed in the last decade. I see no one performing kata exactly as Ohtsuka sensei did in the published videos. What is JOG? Sorry. Auto correct. Should say, "JKF". Thank you to all for the replies. I am in the same space as Oneya and Gusei21, in...
