Re: This makes me angry

Hi, The thing that strikes me as odd is that Wadokai headquarters would even entertain the possibility of this being authentic. If someone sent me a clumsily forged TSYR menjo signed by a kai member of Norma's status, I'd laugh and throw it in the waste basket. A stunt this bone headed does not dese...

Re: Robert Mustard & Toby Threadgill SEPT 2012 in UK

Hi, Many people think of Aikido as some fluffy bunny style of budo, in fact I've met my share of these types of aikidoka....but....Robert Mustard is NOT one of these. He's a fire breathing monster and funny as hell. I met Robert many years ago but only got to know him well when Robert and I demonstr...

Re: Suzuki Tatsuo 8th Dan Hanshi. 1928 - 2011.

Hello, Few individuals ascend to becoming legendary, but Suzuki Tatsuo met that criteria. If one imagines the history of Wado ryu without his powerful presence, you're forced to contemplate a history much diminished. My condolences to all the students and friends of Suzuki sensei. Tobin E Threadgill...

Japanese Terminology/Lexicon

Hello, This is not directed at anyone in particular but something for everyone to consider. When employing terminology from another language, particularly in a closed cultural pursuit such as budo, it is often problematic to consult a contemporary dictionary for definitions because what is provided ...

Re: omote, ura and henka

The interesting recent idori discussion invoked some questions about terminology. Let's see if I got this straight: Omote The outer shape of the kata. The form of the kata as thought to beginners. Ura The principles underlying the omote of the kata. Henka Omote variations. The ura remains unchanged...

Re: Idori

Hi T, Yes, the list of techniques for SYR which I have are from Fujiwara, so there are about 125 techniques (pair kata) listed which is about the same number as the list of techiques for Mr Kubota's line of Tenjin Shinyo Ryu. If we compare these, then at least half, perhaps two thirds, are the same...

Re: Idori

The standing version of shumokudori is something totally different though isn't it, where the throw is more like osotogari for want of a better description? Hi Blackcat, Yes, if you mean in Tenjin Shinyo ryu. In Shindo Yoshin ryu the standing Kanegidori is very similar to the kneeling version. The ...

Re: Idori

Shumokudori footage http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UUE0I-l1EH8 Hakoishi sensei calls this technique 'kubi jime' and on his video he shows it as a variation of shumokudori and gives it the full title of "ura nage kubi jime". Looking at the list of techniques from SYR (Tatsuo Matsuoka) and ...
