Re: Can Kata from other systems be Wadoized?
Thank you for the links. So he is not trying to Wadoize the kata just learn it,fair game! (i'm not saying he cant wadoize it i'm not in a position to judge) I would also say that any kata that is performed/learned from another system by someone as steeped in Wado as Sakagami Sensei is bound to be W...

Re: Interesting demo from John Wicks sensei
I guess demos have to fit the purpose and that purpose lies with the audience. I think back to demos I’ve seen in the past and they have been largely showcase events. I’ll stick to talking about demos I’ve witnessed first hand, rather than discussing stuff on Youtube, or else I’ll be rambling all ov...

Re: The future of Wado ryu
Look at this board. The Kear brothers parted with the WIKF after Suzuki Sensei's passing. They are not a part of the big three yet no one can argue that they have a legitimate place at the Wado dinner table. I might be wrong but Tim Shaw is in a similar situation. I don't know the details of that s...

Re: The future of Wado ryu
Hi Tim, Can you elaborate on what you mean by ossified? Besides things turning into bone I see it can also mean: To mold into a rigidly conventional pattern. Are you meaning that you fear we are becoming more shotokanesque in that we have patterns and drills that are exacting and uniform? And what ...

Re: The future of Wado ryu
A couple of observations. Firstly the Wado we see today (in whatever guise) is nowhere near a finished article – I doubt that there ever will be a finished article as the nature of everything is to change. Ohtsuka himself said this. He is also credited as commenting on his disappointment as to how m...

Re: Internal Power
There is a reason some of us are taught to end each class doing gyakuzuki in tate seishan as opposed to the regular gyakuzuki stance. Both Takagi Sensei and Arakawa Sensei have figured it out and that is why in their classes they have the students do gyakuzuki up and down the floor in tate seishan....

Re: Internal Power
PS, for driving objects through wood with his bare hands, read up on Joseph Greenstein 1893 - 1977 'The Mighty Atom'. Greenstein was 5' 4" and 140 lbs. No Chi needed for this guy. Fascinating... I wouldn't jump to conclusions regarding the Chi part though. It appears ol' Joe had training in ju...

Re: Internal Power
Once I saw the newspaper trick I knew it was bogus. Oh please!! You don’t have a lot of experience with internal martial arts of China Tim? Well its not a trick and its not bogus Tim. Not this guy, many others yes I agree with you 100 % but not for him. If you are interesting you could search about...

Re: 4 ways of Kihon Kumite 1
OK, not as exotic as it sounds. Why invent more kata when it is already there. On the Winter Course Kazutaka Otsuka showed us a drill that some might find an interesting short dalliance from daily life. Basically it is use the underlying responses of tomiri in 4 different ways. Always start in migi...
