Ah yes, all the better for a new posting.

Am slightly confused, but as is the case of forums and lots of writing. I personally wouldn't associate any hip movement in Pinan Shodan movements 1-2-3. There's a lot going up on top but down below, it's a bit like naihanchi. Come to think of it, that's the first time I have thought of it that way....

When I teach those first three movements I talk about opening, closing and then opening the body.

A sad loss indeed for the Otsuka family with Kazutaka Sensei having lost his mother at the beginning of the year and now his father.

I've had the privilege to be on the receiving end of his instruction and it was pleasure and honour.
