Re: Ouch! Accidents in the dojo

The only experiance that's made me think on this matter has been when someone struck me properly under the arm during kihon kumite four. It left my arm numb as they struck right under the arm pit. Being used to body blows and even to taps to the head I am usually quite happy to let contact go. Yet, ...

Re: Clubs, instructors and dojo approach.

Okay, that makes sense. As I said, I hadn't really come to a conclusion on the matter myself so for now this is simply food for thought. Yet it is useful to read the logic behind this approach to the matter. That was curious example Wadoka, but really put the matter into focus, so thank you for the ...

Re: Clubs, instructors and dojo approach.

So you to are of the view that one has to understand the culture, but not neccessarily embrace it? Again; I would ask why? What is the underlying logical justification for this stance? Note, I have not attached myself to either extreme of this debate. I have not formulated a view myself yet, hence t...

Re: Clubs, instructors and dojo approach.

I suppose every debate is a potential source of a catch 22 logic situation. As in my initial post on the subject; I can understand the need to understand the context of the culture so as to understand the why and how of the technical system, as inevitably that has an impact on the way the techniques...

Re: Clubs, instructors and dojo approach.

I can see and understand your points; but isn't the inherent cultural barrier in the way of truly making the rituals we practice within the dojo anything more than simple imitations of the Japanese traditions? Unless one has immersed themselves in the Japanese culture by going to Japan and living th...

Re: Clubs, instructors and dojo approach.

Thank you for the suggestions, I shall take them into consideration as suggestions at my next meeting with my society group.

I wouldn't dare fob any one off to a blue belt, I'd feel too mean to the blue belt. :P

Re: Clubs, instructors and dojo approach.

I am going to try your approach with the karate society I am president of Wadoka. We are opening a club for beginners but I shall try your approach, as we are students we do not have time to waste and this sounds like it would be the way to make sure waste is kept to a minimum. @Tim49: Just to play ...

Re: "Wado is boring"

That video is, I have no words available to me to describe my reaction to seeing it. Is it a blue or purple belt? My colour blindness prevents me from seeing it clearly. I am not a religious man but I am praying it is not black. Thanks for posting it, I now understand why Shintani is the byword for ...

Re: "Wado is boring"

I often find that the people who have something to say too often waste their time saying it to the wrong people. I have looked for the world statistics but could only find examples for the United States (http://www.nsga.org/files/public/2007rankedbytotal.080423.pdf) and Canada (http://dsp-psd.pwgsc....

Re: "Wado is boring"

She probably had valid reasons for finding her own experiance with Wado Ryu boring. Seems like she didn't stick it long enough to find the real differences between it and Shotokan to find it enjoyable. I'd not take her calling it boring as anything serious or substantial Majin, just a personal remar...
