Re: Gary's lone wolf howlin'
Hi Reg, Sorry for not responding earlier, I've been on my Jollies and am now back at work - swamped as usual! Yes, the participation in that thread turned out to be an exercise in futility, however as one of my previous posts on another forum was its reason in the first place, I felt duty bound to g...

Re: Analyze this... Intent
Work beyond the physical "omote" of the kata and aspects like "Kobo ichi" (attack and defence being one), are what makes it tick. It's the genius behind Kihon Kumite in my opinion - as it is an exercise in strategy. The negashi-uke isn't just there to keep your opponents fist awa...

Central London Wado Clubs
Hi, Can anyone suggest a Wado club in central London or North East London? Preferably - JKF Wado-kai, Wado-ryu Renmei or WIKF. A former club member now lives and works in this area and is keen to re-establish her training. It seems odd, but apparently there is very little on offer in the metropolis....

Re: Article by Kano: "Jujutsu and the origins of Judo" (1887
On the gendai hand though, I'm not quite sure what you mean by your comment but the 'different spin' I see is: Wado ryu tanto kata raising a whole raft of ma, maai and other sabaki complexities that can broaden the awareness and ability of practitioners well beyond their shiai years and introduce a...

Ben, That was a good read, thanks for sharing. About terminology... As a understand it, the various traditions often apply the terms to imply different things. Koshi no Mawari for example is mentioned in the essay as meaning circling around the hip (as in wrestling around the hip) where as in SSR th...

Re: Article by Kano: "Jujutsu and the origins of Judo" (1887
and that certainly puts a different spin on things (a la Tanto-dori)! Interesting kata comparison and conclusion Gary which perhaps would be true of a comparison with the Shindo Yoshin Ryu tradition also. I am assuming you mean Wado ryu tando dori here and if so, d'ye not think perhaps it is an app...

Re: Article by Kano: "Jujutsu and the origins of Judo" (1887
Certainly Takenouchi-ryū is considered by many who study historical Jujutsu as the most influential extant system. It is essentially the progenitive school of pretty much all jujutsu ryū -ha today. As the article references however, a fair bit of it involves grappling with blades (kogusoku) – and th...
