Re: Gedan Barai

Hi Inagokun, welcome to the forum. Your question is almost impossible to answer because the premise is incorrect which leaves anyone responding wondering what part of the question to try to unravel. In broad terms everything in wado ryu is a process which means that it is in a constant state of chan...

Re: kuzushi waza

Ohyo No 8 always seemed like the orphan child at the end of the series to me. Often misunderstood and little practised when compared with Nos 1-7, and yet it offered training in kuzushi before we even knew that there was a word for it. As I recall, it was always taught with the knee inside. Althoug...

Re: syllabus differences

Repetition - being a major factor in absorbing Japanese martial arts - tends to have its pitfalls too so what is particularly interesting for me is whether the first two steps (sic') are always utilised by torimi or just used to get to the third.

Re: syllabus differences

Suzuki Tatsuo sensei introduced the concept of Sanbon kumite to the UK and Europe in 1965. Shotokan under Kanazawa Hirokazu sensei, who also arrived in the UK around 1964, also practiced Sanbon and Gohon kumite at that time. There were style differences in the technique and principles but essentiall...

Re: kuzushi waza

Then I went back to my old notebooks where I was training with Suzuki Sensei twice a week at the Sobell Centre and also at Marvic House and I found that we'd been working on it with the knee to the outside. Maybe it's a moveable feast? Tim I realise that I am telling you what you already know Tim, ...

Re: Tobikomi zuki-nagashi zuki

The 'holes' you find have their 'lifespan' in your not understanding. Ah, such a great quote. It can be applied to so many faucets of life. It's almost Hitchens-like. --Oneya-like Ah poor ol' Christopher Hitchens, one of the few men with the intellect and willpower to change his political stance as...

Re: Small details

Hi Tim,

Of course you are right and in the dojo I am as likely to answer a question with a question so that I don't feel I am denying the student the opportunity to walk his own path. My answer stems from a personal tamashiwara experience that plagues me to this day...

Re: Small details

Yes also Naihanchi has vertical fist but Chinto is different because the ulna nerve is not in the line of fire because the opposite hand receives on the forearm. All small differences and not just a matter of chance.

Re: Small details

If you hold the empi position and and rotate the fist from vertical to horizontal position and back again. You may feel something different with the shoulders and elbow positions. Wadoka is right but if you do feel something different with the shoulders and/or elbows position you are carrying too m...
