Re: Are Kihon Kumites just examples that show us how we should analyze wado katas?

Thanks for your answer! Personally I started being very open minded towards mixing arts at one point when I was younger, then became somewhat of a purist and now it's a certain kind of mixture of these two. Now I try to think that the world is universal and there is wisdom to be picked everywhere, m...

Re: Are Kihon Kumites just examples that show us how we should analyze wado katas?

Hi Keith, Out of interest, when you said your use of Kihon kumite differs from Wado purists, could you elaborate a little more on that? Having seen many different approaches from different kinds of purists, I can't put that part into a context. I personally think Kihon kumite has many different dime...

Re: Are Kihon Kumites just examples that show us how we should analyze wado katas?

Hi, In my opinion kihon kumite teaches stuff that isn't there in the solo katas as explicitely. For example taisabakis and blocking techniques. Of course bridges between these start to build, but I'd say kihon kumite is also an independent series. Then again year after year I start feeling a stronge...

Re: Do the other kata matter?

I agree to Wado heretics point about something changing after the nine. No wonder Otsuka sensei eventually thought and taught, the nine are the only katas in Wado. Personally I have enjoyed the rest too and even had time-periods of focusing on a few of them. Then I choose ones, that have the most mo...

Re: Body Mechanics

Now the famous Ellis Amdur has written about his training with Akuzawa and Aunkai in general. http://kogenbudo.org/akuzawa-minoru-the-body-is-a-sword/ A very good and interesting read. I usually copy some part for further discussion, but will respect Amdur's wish in the end of the text not to. The t...

Re: Smashing and smearing eggs into the chest

Hi, When I was teaching more, I tried to explain as much as possible in a way that either gives a somewhat objective analysis of what is happening or tells the students what to do at this point at the training session. I like the latter one more. Explanations are usually too difficult to get, if you...

Changing kata - Improvement or destruction?

Hi, I have previously learned two different ways to move as a result of the opponent making his second punch in Kihon kumite 4. One of them is leaning back and the other one is more moving away from the line with your body straight. In both of these, you twist in such a way that your right shoulder ...

Re: Niseishi

Hi, Both Shotokan and Shitoryu are doing basically the same stream of outer form of the kata and the mawashiuke is the same type as how it is done in Wadokai. Suzuki sensei did the same, except when pulling, he switched hands. Otsuka sensei did pretty much the same as Wadokai on the Ajari-video but ...

Re: Wado Ryu in MMA?

Hi, I think the video generalizes traditional martial arts to a scene, where they actually have arts that are less traditional and more of the McDojo movement. I'd say a lot of the good BJJ is more traditional than a lot of the arts they are describing. When it comes to Wado in MMA, I don't know abo...
