Re: Analyze this... Intent

Not forgetting that metaphysical intent is intangible (mukei) and so not the initiator of the sequence. It is one’s Will which is the tangible (yuukei) precursor that ensures sente and the counter attack ending for Torimi is already entrained by holding ko bo ittai in a pre-eminence where the willfu...

Re: Beautiful Naihanchi performance and a question.

Naihanchi is a wonderful kata Martin but perhaps in context it is even more wonderful that its simple structure can develop and evolve the human condition....

Re: Beautiful Naihanchi performance and a question.

Hi Martin, Naihanchi kata, like all wado ryu kata and wado ryu itself is a process rather than a set of discrete or standard techniques to learn. The process is one of first building its frame of reference which then becomes a continuing study piece. The more we study it the more we understand it as...

Re: Wado, budo, self-defence.... What's it all about?

Ah, is this the ghost of Acer past complaining about hooks that pass in the night Igor..? Anyway, kihon kumite is not fighting. It is a practice called keiko - 稽古 - the first kanji of which 稽means ‘consider’ and the second kanji 古means ‘old’... Placed together like so: 稽古. It can mean a physical pra...

Re: Wadoworld Article: Ohtsuka's Lazy-zazen

You are right Michael, it is all in the context, although perhaps even more than this. If the book ‘Wado Ryu Karate’ by Hironori Otsuka, with its slightly garbled translation by Shingo Ishida that gives us on page 105: “ taking a Shimata-tachi (punch with the left)” if this teaches us anything it ha...

Re: Wadoworld Article: Ohtsuka's Lazy-zazen

The skill of "Budo" is ever changing. Consequently there is no limit for it. Changing the skill of martial arts is indeed unlimited. A life is the same we never know what will happen to you in a moment. We should resort to a temporary expedient. Everyday we have to anticipate and prepare ...

Re: Article by Kano: "Jujutsu and the origins of Judo" (1887

Yes, apples and oranges Reg. I wasn't seeking to compare SSR with Wado (or SYR for that matter). They are very different. My point was about the introduction of a weapon into practice. Gary Just to clarify Gary: I meant comparing the wado apple with either SSR or SYR oranges rather than the pith, p...

Re: Article by Kano: "Jujutsu and the origins of Judo" (1887

and that certainly puts a different spin on things (a la Tanto-dori)! Interesting kata comparison and conclusion Gary which perhaps would be true of a comparison with the Shindo Yoshin Ryu tradition also. I am assuming you mean Wado ryu tando dori here and if so, d'ye not think perhaps it is an app...

Re: New Wado Book

I have already ordered my copy. Ben has always been a meticulous historian and I like the way he digs out the truth.

Now that's an interesting comment Doug..
