Re: Go Kan Ryu
Okay; thanks for the information. I have asked him to bring in his licence book and certifcation up to now for insurance purposes anyway; I shall probably offer him a trial run and warn him that if he's not up to scratch or not contributing enough he will be asked to leave. If he's taken part in any...

Not assuming any idolising; I said as much as an observation of the potential dangers that exist in the martial arts. People invest a lot of money and time so for some the idea of cross training or exploring outside their own heterodoxy can be a difficult idea to get their head around. Rather my maj...

Go Kan Ryu
This is just a simple question; what on Earth is it? I am just asking as tonight when I was training with my Karate society (by myself with my Sempai because no one else showed up again, lazy kohai) we had this guy show up who asked to train with us. He claimed to do this thing called Go Kan Ryu (Ra...

@Gusai: I agree, Naihanchi is principle driven and the core of all kata. I practice it 3-6 times a day because of it's importance. I agree it teaches principles but at the same time I have to disagree in some respects, especially on Motobu. The 12 kumite exercises Motobu put in his book "Okinaw...

Re: Wado, budo, self-defence.... What's it all about?
I am aware Mr Abernathy no longer claims to teach Wado Ryu; however the kata he works from do come from Wado Ryu, or so I last checked. Unless he's gone the Patrick McCarthy way of collecting any kata with the word Koshiki in it or ones that seem to be unique to Okinawa. That is what I was working f...

One can always mention the worst swear word a wado practitioner can use: bunkai. Defences against what you are talking about Acer exist in kata, or so the application ethusiasts claim. Personally I am not entirely convinced, however applications are practiced in Okinawa and are a traditional part of...

Re: Training in between classes
As you have only just started you can run the risk of simply practicing bad technique in some areas, without the instructor there to correct any glaring errors you may simply turn an error into a habit. When I started I simply practiced the shell of the kata I was learning, but slowly so as to just ...

Re: To practice or search
I have had to change arts twice, from Kenpo Karate to Judo/submisison wrestling and now onto Wado Ryu where I am finally happy as I have found a quality teacher. If you want to continue with Wado Ryu then first try searching in the area you'll be moving to and see if a club exists there. I am typing...
