Re: Documentary
I see you're are sorted for a copy Reg. I plan to watch it this week end, so I hope it's good! Regards Kate Williams Don't leave it too late Kate, it says its only there for another 3 days. I thought it was a good piece of TV. The Suzuki sections are frustratingly short, the first is the footage of...

Re: Suzuki Interview 2008
I have to admit to being slightly disappointed by the questions asked by the interviewer. Of all the things that could have been asked of Suzuki Sensei, why those questions? It seems like the questions were were for a non-martial arts audience, or for a general Karate audience.

Re: Documentary
Interesting documentary on BBC4 last night, documenting the rise of the Martial Arts in the UK since 1900. Suzuki gets a quick look in about half way through but blink and you miss him. Interesting old footage of sparring in the 60's and 70's My apologies to those outside the UK who can't see it. h...

Re: I am a fighter. I don’t do kata.
One particular Wado fighter with an excellent international record as competitor and coach once told me that he stopped using pure Wado nagashizuki in competition because referees were not trained to see it. His only option was to knock his opponent’s head back with it, which is no option at all. Th...

I like that Gordon, because it expresses the idea of joined up Wado. It is all one.
Bravo.

Re: I am a fighter. I don’t do kata.
I’m just curious here; because I think I must be missing the point. Are we saying that nobody on here has been able to extract from their kata (practice of kata) something valuable enough to utilize in their approach to fighting? Is there knowledge in kata that would be very unlikely to come directl...

Re: I am a fighter. I don’t do kata.
Hey Reg, I remember this story about Lord Palmerston. He was schmoozing with the French ambassador, who said to Palmerstone, “Do you know, if I was not born a Frenchman I would want to be an Englishman”. And Palmerston’s reply was “And if I was not born an Englishman I would want to be an Englishman...

Re: I am a fighter. I don’t do kata.
As in all these things I think it is useful to define your terms. What we mean by ‘Wado’ should be fairly simple (or is it?) What we mean by ‘fighting’ might be more problematic; particularly when you come at it from what Andy seems to be describing as fighting. Try it this way: Look at Wado as a fi...

Re: I am a fighter. I don’t do kata.
Someone emailed me outside of the forum and made a statement along the lines of Wado is a great art but useless for fighting. Seems apt to drop that in now. Goes back to the purpose of karate. I started when I was 11, am now 44 and hope to be still training for a long long time still. Maybe that's ...
