Re: Tachi-dori. Tachi-dori (Or muto-dori) in koryu jujutsu of the unarmed vs. armed variety is a rarity*, but it does exist. Within the ryuha that do train tachi-dori unarmed in their various ways, it is usually the zenith of their repertoire of skills. Some ryuha during demonstrations have "wa...

Re: Interesting tale of someone berated for showing idori

Hi Steve, I think I remember you mentioning that, in Japan, if you refer to yourself as practicing jujutsu form example - people wouldn’t really understand what you mean - so you would mention Judo instead? Point of Gordon's story really - Wado ryu Idori is closer to Judo in this respect, although,...

Re: Interesting tale of someone berated for showing idori

It also shows that even in Japan - people want to compartmentalise martial arts. If you kick and punch things - you are karateka. If you throw / grapple people you are Judoka. If you do both - you don't fit in to a box!!! Gary And what if you grapple, strike and have weaponry systems in your curric...

Re: 2011 Tachi Dori Demo Jon Wicks

The uke has very little knowledge of how to use a sword properly, how to do reiho with a nihonto or wear a hakama properly. He cuts and thrusts with his shoulders instead of his hips and has some serious "telegraphic" movements. He needs more training in JSA before doing an embu again IMHO...

Re: Goose neck wrist lock

After looking at a clearer picture of it, I guess it could still be called "kamate" (鎌手), but it's not really a lock or a restraint.
Of course if done quickly enough, it could be a limb destruction.

Re: Goose neck wrist lock

Is it this one?

If so, it's called kamate-kime (鎌手極め) or "sickle hand lock". In the UK, this is called a "gooseneck" in the army and police.

Best,

Re: Tetsuzan Kuroda body movement video

Hi Gary, What about without rising the body? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2uQdhQl6RsI edit: Nukina sensei (first time I saw it, I'm in the background, longer hair!) http://www.ishikawa-karate.com/images/image060.jpg This is one of the basic principle exercises in some systems of koryu jujutsu. No...

Re: Kata competion?

Would that be the same with kumite/Gumite, Kata/Gata?? shep In the Japanese language, a number of words when suffixed have a phonetic syllabic shift. Some words starting with a "K" (Ka, ki, ku and so on) when suffixed start with a "G", "S" words start with a "Z&qu...
