Re: Does the solo kata warrant the attention it receives?
Function over form!? I always find it difficult to comment on threads on this, so perhaps I shouldn't!! With my very simplistic understanding however - I think the two are different with alternative purposes that converge... eventually!!! It is my belief that the 'genus' of Wado isn't Okinawan karat...

Re: BLocks at Jodan level.
Hi Mezusmo, I read somewhere (Otsuka's book I think) that Wado Shuto-ukes were deliberately practiced at jodan (rather than chudan) because it was better/harder training due to hands being further away from the centre. In Ohgami's book he explains the principle of 'double moment' where the body rota...

Re: Maegeri - mawashigeri
Just on the subject of Mawashi-geri and as an aside (sorry Bob)!
Does anyone else feel that it is a bit of cuckoo?
As far as I remember, it doesn't appear in any wado solo, or paired kata!?

Re: Maegeri - mawashigeri
Hi, Over analysing? :) What else could we do in writing except analyse? And of course there is a lot to analyse in kicking too. I don't completely share Gary's opinion about kicking in the direction of the toes in the grounded foot. And it seems MT-fighters are stressing the opening of the hip quit...

Re: Maegeri - mawashigeri
You kick in the direction of the grounded foot... If you need reach, you open the hip (by turning the toes of the grounded foot/knee away). If you want power - and correct muscular alignment (adductor [edit] and core muscles working as they should) - opening hips isn't too great. Watch Muay thai fig...

Re: (Wado and) Okinawan Karate
Put this in perspective. Prior to WWII the population of Okinawa was about 300,000. In what the Americans call the 'Battle for Okinawa the body count for the civilian population of Okinawa was very high. The Japanese lost 77,000 soldiers just in that particular battle. The Okinawan civilian body co...

Re: Does anyone else play golf?
Golf's never really floated my boat! I did a very short stint of trying to enjoy it, but never really got there! However, I do understand how it can be nice to apply the disciplined mind you develop by being a martial artist - to other skills. Mine's archery, and has been for a few years now. I'm st...

Re: New Wado Kata Bunkai Book
Certainly I see much of what I have learned in other arts within Wado techniques and that is the reason for my continued love of and enthusiasm for the art, in which I have been honoured to have been supported by Shinohara Sensei, 8th Dan, (despite not being a member of his organisation) who was of...

Re: New Wado Kata Bunkai Book
The book was written to look at bunkai from a uniquely Wado perspective as I believe that the changes Master Otsuka made from Shotokan were to make them more relevant to HIS techniques. Hello Mr Dart and welcome to the Forum. Could you expand on what you consider “HIS” techniques? Not seeking conte...
