Re: Shiai in Wado context
I've watched a lot of karate kumite, and it seems the idea of bouncing goes through cycles, as well as techniques (e.g. side kick going in and out of vogue) and angle of hips and shoulders (i.e. mamne vs. hamne). Still not sure what to make of it all. I've been taught not to bounce and to be only sl...

Re: Analyze this... Intent
When I would get tied up in knots discussing technique and intent and chi flow, my sifu, a combat vet of the Vietnam War, would tell me, calmly, "Kaneshige, grab hold the sword, they're coming over the hill." (Of course, he also suffered from PTSD.)
Sensing
I ran across this article in the New Yorker and was wondering if it relates to karate and mushin and the ability to sense your opponent's intention to attack. The article, entitled How to Tell When Someone is Lying, plays up the importance of unconscious perception. Its conclusion: "No matter h...

Whoa, didn't anybody see The Last Samurai? That Tom Cruise guy caught on pretty quick and saved the natives from themselves.

Re: revisiting karate ni sente nashi
The best working border collies (as opposed to show dogs) are valued at up to $30k each, which, of course, means they're also used for breeding stock. I suspect all the top border collies sit on the border collie jedi council.

Re: revisiting karate ni sente nashi
What?! Bob used the word "ki"?! I'm so happy (sniff, sniff). Seriously, though, I really like your three levels of engagement and the existence of a higher state of budo, one built on ki and mushin (which relates to the ability to sense an opponent's intent). I'm also wondering if the seco...

Re: revisiting karate ni sente nashi
Excellent points, Bob. The judicial system at times cruelly, tragically lags behind the truth. Karate, though, has given me a framework for thinking about what happened. On a side note, I have a question about the ability to perceive or sense your opponent's intent in kihon kumite and the taking up ...

revisiting karate ni sente nashi
Given recent news events, I've been thinking a lot about the karate maxim, "karate ni sente nashi," meaning there is no first attack in karate, which reflects our commitment to self-defense. I used to see the maxim exemplified in the three scoring tactics: sen sen no sen, sen no sen and go...

Re: Internal Power
Hi all, greetings from the San Francisco Bay Area. This is my first posting, as I'm inspired by such an interesting thread. I've been thinking about internal energy since taking Tai Chi (Yang style) in the mid-1980s and Wado the last four years. I also recently attended Kenji Ushiro's seminar on Ki ...
