Re: Interesting demo from John Wicks sensei

Reg,

I could not agree with you more. Sweating the small stuff is what leaves the enlightened smiling. It is also why the budo hoi pilloi are left scratching their heads observing Ohtsuka sensei. While watching for Hollywood explosions they miss the bullet through the bullseye.

Re: Interesting demo from John Wicks sensei

Ummmm..... Sometimes I think I need to write a lengthy essay on Ken Toriageru, and yes Arturo is correct. Wado Shinken Shirahadori is it own unique "thing". It is not part of Shindo Yoshin ryu and does not have its origins in any koryu. It was created by Ohtsuka to illustrate the principle...

Re: Emergence of Wado tachi dori, tanto dori & idori from SY

As for ante and fuante ho - I am sure Sensei Threadgill can expound on this but ante just means 'in balance' and fuante means 'off balance'. Ho is method or direction. So at a beginner comprehension level anteho funateho can be translated as strong line/weak line. You unbalance people down their we...

Hi Tobin, All generalisations are false of course but these are interesting all the same. Tim has a nice balanced approach that shows his ability to knit smoke while leaving no footprints in the sandpit and I could easily follow this elegant lead but once we enter this ‘general’ world we become as ...

Hello, A question to ponder. If Ohtsuka taught idori why would he discard the SYR jujutsu principles that were the foundation of their execution? He obviously admired these principles as he inserted them extensively into his expression of karate. There are several possibilities: 1) Ohtsuka taught th...

Re: Excited about Sensei Wicks' clinic

Boy, I agree with everything my friend Steve Delaney said but I must add that evaluating Wado ryu's Shinken Shiraha Dori from the view point of a koryu budoka is rather unfair. Its similar to a koryu kenjutsu practitioner evaluating aikido's aiki ken. Apples and oranges..... Wado ryu Shinken Shiraha...

Re: hakama ? now with the video...

Hello,

Tucking up the hakama?

It's called momodachi or ryo momodachi. Most koryu practitioners do this before rigorous training. The samurai also wore waraji (straw sandals) with long laces that were wrapped around the calves and over the legs of the hakama to prevent tripping.

Re: Killing me softly

I find these concepts interesting. I have been practising Taiji for some time, developing different taiji forces mainly for health purposes. Especially in the past 10 years I have discovered more and more similarities between Wado stances and techniques from the south school of Taiji, various daoyi...

Re: Killing me softly

Hello, Mr Kear is very astute. An observer from 60 years ago in Hawaii would have no idea what visually differentiated Judo, Jujutsu or Aikido. Frankly most people couldn't make an accurate distinction of this today if the performer was very advanced. I've had shihan ranked in Aikido tell me I'm doi...

Re: Kihon kumite on the opposite side

Hi, FWIW, the reason most koryu kata are not practiced on both sides has to do with the assumption that one is wearing weapons in the obi. With a sword or wakazashi in the obi, performing most kata on both sides is simply not possible. Only using a bokken for training can create a problematic assump...
