Re: Does the solo kata warrant the attention it receives?

A short Essay by Mabuni Kenwa entitled Practice Kata Correctly. Translation by Mark Tankosich, and the essay recovered from seinenkai.com. In karate, the most important thing is kata. Into the kata of karate are woven every manner of attack and defence technique. Therefore, kata must be practiced pr...

Re: How's training going and why is it so silent here?

Training is going okay. Struggling to get a group together to train with at the moment, but I am still managing to train 2-3 hours a day by myself. The small group I did have has dissolved due to it being a small group, and people having other commitments to get on top of. I did try training with a ...

Re: Are Kihon Kumites just examples that show us how we should analyze wado katas?

Never a problem, and I appreciate informed critique. One of the huge problems in martial arts is a lack of openness to effective critique. In some ways; that is why I have retained the Wado-Ryu Kihon Kumite, despite moving onto the Shorin-Ryu tradition regarding the solo kata. I find the notion of a...

Re: Are Kihon Kumites just examples that show us how we should analyze wado katas?

Of-course; always happy to answer questions. 1. Essentially, yes; I make deliberate changes, and explore the different elements. Sometimes I do the established form "wrong", so I omit a step or a movement, and see the results. I also tend to have my students use attacks from the HAPV model...

Re: Are Kihon Kumites just examples that show us how we should analyze wado katas?

I do still practice the Kihon Kumite, despite considering myself primarily a Shorin-Ryu karateka now, because they are the best way to keep my Wado-Ryu roots. I state that as a bit of a disclaimer in that my view, and use of the Kihon Kumite, differs from that of Wado-Ryu purists. I have a couple of...

Re: Do the other kata matter?

I must admit; this is one of the reasons I moved over to Shorin-Ryu. I found a very natural progression from the the Pinangata to Kushanku, and from Naihanchi to Seishan, and finally a bridging of those two paths of progression in Chinto. There felt as though there was a very logical progression in ...

Re: BLocks at Jodan level.

No problem, and indeed I recall that statement in Nakayama's book. It is indeed true of the block as performed in Shorin-Ryu, and does make all the difference with regards to Shuto-uke as a receiving technique. I think another way to look at it is how Ohtsuka Meijin, and his students, viewed the kat...

Re: BLocks at Jodan level.

I always suspected it was due to Otsuka Meijin's training with Motobu Choki, though I believe Gary's thoughts are also contributing factors. Motobu Choki emphasised that the most vital target in a real fight is the face, and that one does not necessarily need to block every attack from a weak oppone...

Re: Sad news on the passing of Reg Kear

This news completely passed me by; I am sorry to read it, and though rather late also offer my condolences. I must admit that Mr Kear and I rarely agreed on anything in the time I posted on here, and he was still alive. I also never got to meet him, but he did influence my decision regarding my path...

Re: Go Kan Ryu

Apologies for not replying to this personally until now; I rarely log into these forums any more. I can more often be found at karate forums these days. A lot has changed since this topic was originally posted; I graduated from the University in question two years ago and am no longer involved with ...
