Re: Maegeri - mawashigeri
Lasse - a front snap kick - maegeri - is just the act of unbowing the leg :) Do the kick by raising the knee first then extending the leg.... Then do the kick by first raising the heel then unbow.(heel and butt apart). Can you feel the difference? You should.... By the way I reread what I wrote earl...

Re: Maegeri - mawashigeri
Lasse, Something for you to think about. Your centripetal force diagram is good. Now think what happens when it doesn't inscribe a circle but instead a spiral....and the contact point carries more of the center of the mass at impact because its not hitting from 'out there' but from 'in here'... When...

Maegeri - mawashigeri
So.....I might be totally off base here but... Why is it that Otsuka Sensei's mawashigeri is not imitated by any of us? The only one I know who actively copied him was Ajari. I retract that statement. I think Shiomitsu Sensei and Suzuki Sensei also kicked like that? I am not sure. Please chime in if...

Re: (Wado and) Okinawan Karate
Put this in perspective. Prior to WWII the population of Okinawa was about 300,000. In what the Americans call the 'Battle for Okinawa the body count for the civilian population of Okinawa was very high. The Japanese lost 77,000 soldiers just in that particular battle. The Okinawan civilian body cou...

Kata commentary by Arakawa Sensei
http://ryukyu-bugei.com/?p=5126
I am placing this as a topic all its own because there is a lot that can be said about this and I agree with the two gentlemen.
The late Toru Arakawa is one of the two who were interviewed about this subject.

Re: Sad news on the passing of Reg Kear
(I am reposting this from the Naihanchi thread - if you want to put it in context). Reg and I started this thread (Naihanchi) because he felt it was a topic worthy of discussion. Now that he is gone I have mixed feelings about proceeding any further but I think I owe it to him to at least complete o...

Re: New Wado Kata Bunkai Book
I got an email asking why I don't teach any bunkai... Let me just explain how I teach kata. The condensed version. First i teach the pattern. As I teach the pattern I teach the bunkai for each movement (yes, I do!!). All of this is the omote stuff meaning what you see is what you get. The so called ...

Re: New Wado Kata Bunkai Book
Final thought from me on this bunkai thing. IF.....you follow the bunkai path then I can see a need for many kata. The more kata the more bunkai, the more bunkai the more knowledge of various techniques. So by that definition Shito ryu has the most diverse and rich curriculum since they have over 50...

Re: New Wado Kata Bunkai Book
Takagi Sensei is very clear about this with us. We are encouraged to compete in both kata and kumite. When we win we cannot show any emotion. When we lose we cannot show any emotion. We are doing budo sports. The purpose of budo sports is to teach you how to overcome yourself. Nothing more. Its a tr...

Re: New Wado Kata Bunkai Book
As I watched this unfold...and knowing which direction this was going to go.....I have a couple of thoughts. In this current day and age when we have easier access to good information I don't understand why people feel they need to look elsewhere for good stuff. If you want to travel down that so ca...
