Re: Teaching Wado Ryu?

I hate to be publicly scornful, but this is some of the saddest, most self-deluded "martial arts" I've ever seen. It doesn't sadden me. It outrages me. Greg It saddens me to see high ranking sensei (5th Dan) messing with Wado techniques and principles or maybe not even understanding them. ...

Re: I am a fighter. I don’t do kata.

Hi Reg, Thanks for the response. I'm not quite sure what you mean, though. Can you clarify? Is the only purpose of voicing one's opinions about kata on a forum such as this to "move one's recognition or comprehension of wado kata forward"? Are you saying there's no point in a person sharin...

Re: Internal Power

I feel your frustration, Igor. I think that part of the problem is that there are very few people who are excellent at Wado--just as, say, there are very few people who are excellent at any particular art. Then, among those few who are excellent, there is an even smaller group of people who are exce...

Re: I am a fighter. I don’t do kata.

Just now saw that Igor wrote this on another thread: Wado is useless for most part. Just like a painting of Van Gogh is useless. It's even too small to use as wallpaper, so what's the point? However, even though Wado is useless, it is still quite valuable to me. Just like a van Gogh painting. Nice t...

Re: I am a fighter. I don’t do kata.

Palmerston’s reply was “And if I was not born an Englishman I would want to be an Englishman”. I feel the same about Wado. Nice one, Tim. I think there are all sorts of arguments that can be made about the value of kata for learning how to defend oneself, generate power, move with connected structu...

Re: Wimm Massee Demo

Very nice nage and kansetsu waza. Hi, I don't recognise the additional 'take downs' in the kihon kumite (e.g. I've never seen KK#1 end up on the ground in an arm bar before) - is this standard practise in the WIKF these days? Also, the behind the head arm bar seems a little unusual. I'm just a lowly...

Re: Shiai kumite rules

I've just had one of those slap-myself-on-the-forehead moments. I've been saying to my kids for years that this is how it should be done, but in dojo shiai matches I've always followed WKF rules on the basis that this is how they have to do it in competitions. But, of course...who cares? If one is g...

Re: Should it be compulsory?

Somehow that does not surprise me especially in relation to Judo. Even in a 26 year period that figure seems high. I wonder what the figures are for high school football in the USA? Between 1990 and 2010, there were 69 deaths as a "direct" result of football (i.e. impact injuries mostly t...

Re: Should it be compulsory?

Well, apparently that report is in essence correct, albeit imprecise with regards to its numbers. The actual number of deaths is 108 between 1983 and 2009. That's an average of 4 deaths a year. The kids have ranged in age from 12-18. See: http://www.theage.com.au/world/school-judo-deaths-prompt-prot...
