Re: Youtube stuff
Nice find Shep.
Need to ask though - does anyone else see something odd with the Rohai here or is that how it is done in the Renmei?

If you are referring to the use of shiko-dachi versus naihanchi-dachi then yes, this is how Rohai is presented in the Renmei videos.
It's funny that you use the word "odd". While I appreciate this is a fairly common word use to describe different in English, I wouldn't think the use of shiko-dachi in Wado to be considered odd.
Recently someone on YouTube has been putting together the 3 major versions of Wado kata. See link below:

Just playing devil's advocate here but as the head honcho said, "martial arts must never become an igata" so couldn't one argue that the different versions of kata are the manifestations of his students' "live" kata?
Cheers,
Chris

I think it was the one legged loop the loop that looped the other way.

Re: Youtube stuff
I was watching a TV programme the other day and it discussed language. One point it picked up one was the more directness that north Americans use and expect whilst say the Brits might hint at some initially and work towards the actual point in a negotiated way. Yanks need it spelling out.

I think Gary is referring to the two turns later in the kata where the performer in this example continues in an anti-clockwise direction.
If anyone would like the originals of the Kazutaka Otsuka film which Shep posted the link to originally then drop me an email as I have both films for sale.

.
This 'contra' version of Rohai is not new though, I saw it demonstrated by a student returning from a two year stay in the UK about twenty five years ago. At that time it was leaking from a different wado organisation.
I asked "'what was the point?" then and I'd have to ask the same now.

Re: Youtube stuff
If we had never seen Rohai kata before, would it be an unreasonable move to do?
I've not seen it done that way though.

Makes sense, in that it is the way your leg would seem to want to go around.
But then we lose the purpose of the move in this kata.
