Bushinkai Wado-ryu?

Hello,

Does anyone know anything about organization? It's extremely difficult to find any on the internet, which kind of raises a red flag for me. I know (or have been told) that Kazuo Sakura (I'm assuming the instructor Cecil T. Patterson trained with in Japan) started this group after the split. The main instructor here in the US is a Mr. Nakamura who runs the organization from Myrtle Beach, SC. There website talks about kendo, jujutsu, and then karate as three separate entities. The people I've come in contact with also seem pretty intent on laying down their lineage to Otsuka sensei (sometimes when not prompted).

Thanks in advance for any information.

Sorry if this seems a bit rushed, but I've been too busy for too long and I have to get to bed ASAP. I am a member of Bushinkai. Outside of Iwakuni, Japan there isn't much info--no one is very good with computers or webpages! If I'm correct, Bushinkai was started in 1963. Sakura Sensei became a Shinto priest, and I think his responsibilities precluded going overseas to teach. Sakura Sensei was at Meiji University with Motoyoshi Jun and Hada Yoshitaka in the mid 40s(?); Suzuki Sensei was Nichidai I believe. There was an American airbase at Iwakuni, so many servicemen studied at Bushinkai Hombu dojo. John Bell and Floyd Smith trained with Matsuki Sensei, and I believe Bell was ranked godan before going to Cali. Sensei Smith is still in Philly, I believe. Sensei Patterson is not a member of Bushinkai, but rather Wado-ryu Renmei...Sakura Sensei has said he didn't remember him, but I thought therewas some who did. I heard that from Lenny Bennett or Bob Nash or read it. We had a Kendo instructor from Japan going to college here, so we practice kendo though not officially part of Wado-ryu. Same with our kenjutsu/jujutsu syllabus: Nakamura Sensei's mother's family studied Hokushin Itto-ryu and Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu, so we study that too. Not sure what teaching level was received, but it's not officially part of Wado-ryu, Daito-ryu, or Itto-ryu. Feel free to ask more; I just gotta go to bed. And your last statement I'm not quite getting...are you saying, well I don't know. Could you say what they said again, please?

Hi Ove,

Bushinkai is real.
Kazu Nakamura runs it.
He is based in South Carolina.
They have trained with us in the past.
Today they do their own thing.
Suzuki Sensei knew him well thru his instructor, Sakura who was Suzuki's peer.
I attended a seminar with Nakamura when Suzuki Sensei was in Texas one year.

So I will vouch for them. They are real. And everyone I met from that group were all really nice people.

Hi Sergie,

Bushinkai is a real Wado organization. And Sakura Sensei was a contemporary of Suzuki Sensei and they were good friends.
You can't judge a whole organization by one man.
What you see on the video is not Wado but Manaka-ryu which is an aiki jujitsu that Nakamura does outside of Wado.

So if your question is whether the Wado of Bushinkai sucks I would say no.
If you are asking about Manaka-ryu then I have no comment because that has nothing to do with Wado.
Or was your question more about Nakamura as a martial artist?

If you want to see more cool martial arts then see if you can google Hidy Hiraoka. Hidy Hiraoka is a Wado karate master who has the ability to knock people down with his invisible life force. He can do it even if the other guy is standing behind a big tree. He has superhuman skills.
Hidy is based out of the San Francisco area. I trained at his dojo a few times back in the day. He started out in Ajari Sensei's dojo a long time ago. He got to a brown belt.

He then vanished and then reappeared wearing a black belt. He had joined with Jiro Otsuka's Wadoryu. But if memory serves me right he left Jiro Sensei's organization a long time ago and has been independent ever since. Anyway, check him out. Bring popcorn because it is sort of entertaining.

I can do that! I can knock down any guy standing behind me with my life force without touching him . It's amazing, you can't see what happens, you can only hear a sound : "faaaarrrthhh"... I will post a YouTube video one day, I'm the guy with the brown gi...

I guess I can say that there are many real organizations that I would probably not want to train with in fear of being tainted. I think your example for Hidy Hiraoka proves that. Just because the organization is real does not mean it will be what you expect (same goes for the idea that all Japanese practice pure wado). But I will agree that I shouldn't judge an entire organization on one man. I don't think the video discredits them. It's just a little...weird. I've always thought of Wado as the freethinking, enlightened, bright, and practical as opposed to what I like to call "woo woo."

P.S. Sergie must stick from now on :)

Hi Sergio.

All I meant was that we need to compare apples to apples and not apples to oranges.
Nakamura was doing some aiki jujitsu thing and not karate.
His aiki jujitsu is not a part of Bushinkai in Japan to the best of my knowledge.
We need to compare his Wado to other people's Wado. And in that context he is fine.
That's like saying you don't think JKF Wadokai is any good because you saw me falling in a windsurfing video - unless I am misunderstanding your analogy.

If you want to compare his video to some of the 'interesting' Daito ryu aikijutsu stuff out there then I think we have a discussion.
We can even compare it to Shindo Yoshin ryu but ....no...let's not. Shindo Yoshin ryu is to whatever that video was as karate is to windsurfing - a world apart.

Yeah, that's just an aiki trick, not waza within aikijujutsu. I swear if anyone makes fun of the brown belt in this video (it's his shodan test), I'm gonna get mad. His attacks were a little off at times. You can say whatever you want about the black belt...that's me. Sakura Sensei changed ipponme to a full--I just forgot the word...anyway, we practice switching feet on ipponme. I can do it the normal way, too. Hopefully this looks like Wado. (And if you make too much fun of me, I'm gonna cry. And give me a break--my feet were numb from sitting in seiza for 30 minutes.) http://youtu.be/DtixSUjcclA
